DISTINCTION IN THE THIRD SECTOR

Ecológico, and André Vilhena,
executive director of Cempre.

Cempre has been given further stimulus in its commitment to furthering the integrated
management of solid urban waste, the recycling of post-consumer packaging and environmental education. On January 22nd, the association was among those honoured at the 3rd Prêmio Brasil Meio Ambiente – Brazilian Environmental Awards.
Created by the Companhia Brasileira de Multimídia/CBM (responsible, among other media, for the publication of Rio de Janeiro’s “Jornal do Brasil” daily newspaper and the “JB Ecológico” magazine), the awards are co-sponsored by São Paulo’s “Gazeta Mercantil” financial newspaper and Casa Brasil. The objective is to give recognition to private and public figures and institutions from various sectors of society and the economy who are working to promote sustainable development.

Positive impact

The winners received their awards in a ceremony at Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Modern Art (MAM). Opening the event, Reinaldo Paes Barreto, institutional director of the CBM, spoke of analysing the 188 projects received. “All the projects were judged by a technical commission structured by the Brazilian industry federation - Confederação Nacional da Indústria (CNI), through the environment Directorate of the FIRJAN System. The criteria used in the choice were innovation, breadth, creativity, utilization of clean technology and sustainability.” Ten companies were chosen for awards and nine for recognition for the relevance of their actions.
For Cempre president Josemar Picanço, being among those recognised at the Prêmio Brasil
Meio Ambiente was a great incentive for all companies associated with the entity. “For three years these awards have been recognising and publicising those activities that have most promoted environmental preservation. The fact that Cempre stands out in various initiatives around the country demonstrates the importance of the work undertaken by the association. In 2009 we expect to expand the training activities that are so important during
this period of crisis in the market for recyclables.”

HIGH TECHNOLOGY AT THE SERVICE OF RECYCLING

HP’s Brazilian subsidiary has developed a system inserting high technology into the cycle of recycling its products. Known as the Smart Bin, it was created in 2007 and is in a testing phase at the company’s offices for future distribution at sales outlets around the country.
“It is an innovative and pioneering system in the market, and was developed to integrate our productive chain and add greater efficiency, safety and control to the whole process, from disposal to the return of the recycled material, completing the linkage in the sustainable cycle”, says Kami Saidi, HP operations director for Mercosul and director of the Environmental Sustainability Committee at HP Brasil. The Smart Bin works exclusively for the collection of genuine HP ink cartridges and HP product batteries, which are subsequently used to manufacture new cartridges and in some printer models. (See the diagram for the complete operation). “Technology and socio-environmental responsibility need to go hand-in-hand in the promotion of sustainable development. For this reason, the use of RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology makes the Smart Bin an integrated and intelligent model that enables collection and recycling in accordance with international standards”, says Saidi.
