"The new version of Municipal Waste" was launched in 2000, together with the Institute of Technological Research of São Paulo. It was distributed to all Brazilian mayors and is the work of reference about solid waste in the country.
Already translated to Spanish for application in other Latin American countries, it is being utilized as a base for the elaboration of a future manual by the World Bank about waste management in developing countries.

Many different systems are mentioned, like voluntary participacion, door - to - door, the contribution of cooperatives of street scavengers, among others. The initiatives described can also be easily adapted to other developing countries all over the world, specially in Latinamerica.
Guide to street waste picker co-operatives
The publication Guide to street waste picker co-operatives aims to answer basic questions on the setting up and management to street waste picker co-operatives all over Brazil. It brings together information ranging from the principles of the co-operative movement to legal procedures for organization and experiences of co-operatives in recycling material.
Recycling Notebooks
To make aware and technically orient specific segments of the market for the development of programs of selective collection of waste. This is the principle objective of the collection Recycling Notebooks.
The Recycling Notebook No. 1 is directed to the collection of office paper, supplying information necessary for the growing demand by companies that intend to promote the recycling of this material as a form of consciousness of the employees. Close to 90% of the waste generated in our offices is compost for recyclable paper. Beside the technical orientation, the notebook presents successful experiences and offers a report on buyers of shred paper and of distributors of recycled paper.
The Recycling Notebook No. 2 focuses on the role of the Municipalities in the programs of selective collection and sorting, with the stimulation of recycling. Produced in conjunction with the Brazilian Institute of Municipal Administration (IBAM), the notebook’s objective is to introduce the concept of recycling in the administrative actions of the Municipality. The material presents the municipal administrators various alternatives for promoting waste recycling, not with an isolated action, but as an integrated part of basic sanitation.
The Recycling Notebook No. 3 touches upon the practical aspects of selective collection in schools. It was produced in conjunction with the Rio-Cine Cultural Center (CIMA), the institution responsible for the development of an environmental education program in the public schools in Rio de Janeiro and Ceara, focusing on selective collection and recycling of urban waste. For environmental education campaigns, this notebook brings important assistance. It includes a report of other educational materials relating to recycling.
Is your business throwing away recyclable materials?
Recycling Notebook No. 4, made in partnership with SENAI of Rio de Janeiro and Associação Ecológica ECOMARAPENDI, deals with the practical aspects of how to mount a program of residue separation in factories. It explains efficient ways to mobilize the employees around the cause of selective collection, of the environment in general, and includes a "do it yourself" pamphlet for internal evaluation of the residues generated in offices, the assembly line, the dining hall, among other locations.
The Recycling Notebook No. 7 - his publication helps in the organization of a project of selective collection in residential and commercial condominiums, in the most diverse scales. Beyond tips on pass-the-I pass to implantation and operation, the publication contains posters that assist in the sensitization and orientation of the joint owners.
Recycling and Businesses
Do you want to make money through recycling? Cempre distributes the series "Recycling and Businesses" about business opportunities in this area, with the necessary information to implant your own recycling business.
This booklet, entitled Granulated Plastic- Profile of a Plastic Recycler, has as an objective to supply technical and economic information to set up a plastic recycling business. It has useful addresses and bibliographics references. The booklet also brings the simulated set up of a business dimensioned for a 100Kg/h production basis or a 775t/year basis for the processing of pre selected plastic material, resulting in a 591t/year basis recycled plastic pellets, with an annual operation receipt of US$219,850.
"Molded Pulp - Profile of a Paper Recycler", discusses about two recycling processes of newspaper shreds for manufacturing of packaging for fruit, fragile pieces, "fast food", among others. The manual process, called discontinuous, requires less investment and small scale of production. The automated process, called continuous, requires greater investment and large scale.
"The Scrap Broker and the Selective Collection" are directed to small and medium businesses that already operate in the commercialization of scrap, like surpluses of paper, metal, glass and plastic. The manual aims to teach the new opportunities resulting from environmental education being practiced in schools and factories. With more children and adults separating materials, increasing the quantity and the quality of scraps, increasing it’s resale price. It also includes a report of suppliers of equipment utilized in the separation of scraps.
Opportunities for recycling PET utilized principally for soft-drink packaging, are growing. "Bundling and Revaluation of PET Scraps", done together with the Brazilian Association PET Packaging Manufacturers (Abepet), shows how to mount a PET scrap business, offering two product options: bundles of used bottles or flakes made from these bottles.
